9th Southampton City Scout Group has been serving young people in our local community for over seventy years. We are proud of our long-standing commitment to the values of Scouting and to helping young people develop skills for life.
Our Group was founded in the early 1950s, with our beginnings generally traced to around 1953. The Group was established by Reverend Milne of St Jude’s Church, who recognised a clear need for a Cub Pack within the local community. His vision was to provide younger members with opportunities for friendship, learning, and personal development through Scouting, and this marked the beginning of what would become 9th Southampton City Scout Group.
From these early beginnings, the Group developed and grew, maintaining a close and valued link with St Jude’s Church. The church has played an important role in supporting the Group over many years, helping to embed Scouting firmly within the life of the local community. This relationship reflects shared values of service, respect, and support for young people.
Over the decades, 9th Southampton City Scout Group has evolved in line with changes in Scouting and in society, while remaining true to its core purpose. Generations of young people have taken part in our programme, enjoying weekly meetings, camps, outdoor activities, and community involvement. As with many long-established Scout Groups, our continued success has relied on the dedication and commitment of volunteer leaders, helpers, parents, and supporters.
In 2014, we were proud to celebrate our 60th anniversary, marking six decades of Scouting in Southampton. This milestone provided an opportunity to reflect on our history, recognise the contributions of those who have supported the Group over the years, and celebrate the positive impact Scouting has had on so many young people.
Throughout our history, we have aimed to provide a balanced and engaging programme that encourages young people to develop confidence, resilience, leadership, and teamwork. Outdoor adventure has always been central to our activities, alongside a strong emphasis on service to others and engagement with the local community.
Today, 9th Southampton City Scout Group continues to build on this proud heritage, supported by our volunteers and families. While our programme and methods have adapted over time, our values remain unchanged.
We remain committed to offering young people fun, challenge, and adventure, and to ensuring that Scouting continues to play a positive role in our community for many years to come.
